Auditioning Problems and Solutions: How Young Can You Be in an Orchestra?

Because of the highly organized arrangement of an orchestra and the fact that the quality of the music depends no each and every one of the musicians involved being at the height of their performance, it’s no surprise that most orchestras are very strict about age. Some will have a limit regarding both their oldest and youngest members, and most orchestras will also recommend that parents with children under the age of 6 not beallowed at the concert.

So, as a musician, how young is too young when it comes to taking part in an orchestra? In most cases, the minimum age requirements vary. Some orchestras only accept musicians over the age of 18, while others – especially those focused on younger age groups, such as the Asian Youth Orchestra – will accept auditions from people who are even 16-17 years of age.

Does that mean you should consider auditioning? While there is no harm in trying out your talent, in most cases, prestigious orchestras will demand a certain level of skill and proficiency, so it will be hard to get in on talent alone.

However, as long as you can demonstrate that you can play a slow and a fast movement using the instrument of your choice, and you can show that you have the necessary skill, most orchestras will be happy to accept you even if you’re under 18.
